Countdown Begins for New Angus Recycling Scheme

Changes are coming to Angus! Starting next week, households in Arbroath, Carnoustie, and Monifieth will receive new blue bins for paper and cardboard as part of Angus Council’s new kerbside recycling scheme.

Key Changes

  • New Blue Bins: Delivered to 65,000 households for paper and cardboard.
  • Glass Ban: Glass must now be taken to one of nearly 200 new neighborhood recycling points.
  • Collection Adjustments: Alternate fortnightly collections for grey bins (plastics and cans) and new blue bins.
  • Food Recycling Expansion: An additional 4,000 households will be included in the food recycling scheme.
  • Non-Collection Penalties: General waste bins (purple) with too much recyclable material may not be collected.

Community Feedback

While the council aims to save £500,000 annually, the changes have sparked mixed reactions:

  • Glass Recycling Concern: 80% of residents preferred continuing kerbside glass collection.
  • Survey Results: Majority support for tougher recycling enforcement, but residents face challenges with new glass recycling logistics.

Implementation Schedule

The first phase begins with the delivery of blue bins starting June 3rd. Residents will receive information packs detailing the changes and how they affect household waste collection. The council is still finalizing locations for the new glass recycling points and will update their website as new sites are added.

Current Glass Recycling Points

In the first phase areas, the current glass recycling points include:

  • Arbroath: Tesco car park, Asda car park, and more.
  • Carnoustie: Co-op car park, Craws Nest car park.
  • Monifieth: Tesco car park.
  • Nearby Villages: Locations in Colliston and Friockheim.
